Emulsen is made by one film photographer. Email goes to a person, not a ticket queue — so please include your phone model and what you were doing when something went wrong. It genuinely speeds things up.

Backups

Emulsen stores everything on your phone. There is no cloud copy, which means nobody — including us — can restore your records if the app is removed. Export a backup regularly.

• To export: Settings → Backup → export, then save the file somewhere off the phone: Drive, Files, or email it to yourself.
• To restore: Settings → Backup → import, then pick the file. Restoring replaces everything currently in the app, so export first if there is anything you want to keep.
• A backup is a plain JSON file. Anything that can open text can read it, so store it somewhere you trust.

Camera tags

Each camera can have a QR label or an NFC sticker that opens Emulsen straight to that camera.

• QR works on every phone. Open the camera’s tag screen, screenshot it, and print it around 20–25 mm square. Matte sticker paper scans better than gloss.
• NFC needs a phone with NFC. Use a blank on-metal (anti-metal / ferrite-backed) NTAG213 sticker — camera bodies are metal, and an ordinary tag won’t read reliably stuck to one. Assign it in the app, then a tap opens that camera. Find on-metal NTAG213 tags on Amazon.
• Tags hold only a link to a camera record on your own device. They contain nothing personal and are meaningless on someone else’s phone.

The light meter

The meter takes a reflected-light reading through your phone’s camera and offers practical shutter-and-aperture combinations for the film speed you set.

It is a starting point, not a replacement for a handheld meter. Phone cameras apply their own processing, and reflected readings are fooled by snow, backlight, and very dark subjects in exactly the way any reflected meter is. For irreplaceable frames, bracket.

The negative viewer

Photograph a developed negative on a lightbox or a bright white screen, fill the frame with one image, and Emulsen inverts it so you can see what you got.

It is a preview, not a scanner. Stronger, more even backlight gives a cleaner positive. Colour negatives carry an orange base, so a little warmth adjustment is normal.

Notifications

If you log a lab drop-off with an expected turnaround, Emulsen can remind you when the roll is probably ready. These are scheduled by your phone; nothing is sent over a network. If reminders do not appear, check that notifications are enabled for Emulsen in your phone’s system settings.

Privacy

Emulsen has no account, no server, and no analytics. Nothing you enter leaves your device unless you export it yourself. The full detail is in the Privacy Policy.

Reporting a problem

Email info@emulsen.com with:

• your phone model and OS version;
• what you expected, and what happened instead;
• the screen it happened on;
• a screenshot, if it is something you can see.

Because Emulsen collects no diagnostics, a description from you is genuinely the only signal there is. Bug reports are read and they do get fixed.
